erfly Help?

We have a monarch erfly, we got it from catipillar and it went into a crsylis and must have come out last night. But now it's wings are folded and crumpled and he (or she) keeps trying to open them by slowly flapping the wings. My mom tried spraying water on them to see if that would help but it didn't seem to. We had one catipillar before and we kept it in a large jar and everything worked out allright. But this time we forgot to put a stick in the jar. We have him outsiide and he is eating the nectar out of some flowers but I am trying to wait until nighttime so maybe it will be cooler and open his wings. When I took him outside after someone brought him in and I tried to put him on some milkweed and he kept tryying to get back on my fingers. Could you please tell me what to do?
